Rob Lane

Passionate about PR & journalism

Rob Lane Founder & Managing Director | Freelance journalist

“After many years as an editor, publisher & journalist (with a lengthy PR ‘sabbatical’), I formed Bigger Boat in 2009, initially focussing on CE then expanding into B2B tech (whilst continuing to moonlight as a journalist). Below is a roundup of skills & working history, informing our approach to PR. There’s an innate understanding of journalism within our core.”

    Journalistic beginnings

Rob’s first journo gig was Equity & Law’s in-house mag in 1987, followed by a three year sabbatical in banking then four as a student – culminating in a post-grad magazine journalism qualification. After a year as reporter for award-winning timber business title, TTJ, he moved into AV as editor & launch editor for a number of consumer magazines.

    Public relations

Rob first employed his journalistic skills in PR as a Senior Account Manager for Fodor Wyllie Assoc in 1997. He was lured back to journalism as full time editor on Home Entertainment magazine, but continued to moonlight as freelance PR for various consumer electronics companies in the years leading up to the launch of Bigger Boat in 2009.

  • Touchpoint

    Client publishing

Rob produced numerous client publications in the ’90s and 00’s, for the likes of Sony and Sky. Bigger Boat also has a deserved reputation for creating professional and innovative publications for clients. TouchPoint digital quarterly included the most sophisticated use of video in the world and FLUX one-shot also boasted a gorgeous print edition.

  • Blah2

    Magazine editing: in focus

His first editorship was new launch, In-Car, and Rob soon took the reins on Home Entertainment, overseeing its most successful period and a lucrative annual awards ceremony – whilst also acting as secretary for Euro awards group EISA. Rob went on to launch/edit What Home Cinema, What DVD, What HDTV and What Plasma.

  • Untitled-1

    Magazine publishing

Rob launched Home Cinema Digest (HCD) in 2002, through his & his wife’s joint publishing/broadcast company, Compulsion Media Ltd – which also worked with Sky and various corporate video clients.
